D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams Honored as Regional Leader of the Year
D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams was honored at COG's annual membership and awards luncheon for his leadership and dedication to regionalism. Williams was selected for the 2006 Elizabeth and David Scull Award for his dedication to several of the region's greatest needs, such as funding for Metro and air quality. The mayor was noted for his work with the governors of Maryland and Virginia to address needs of the National Capital Region, as well as his efforts to restore the Anacostia and Chesapeake Bay and to promote the region as a tourist destination. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association was also honored with the 2006 Regional Partnership Award for its partnership in the most successful Bike to Work Day to date.

Corporate Officers Appointed for 2007
Jacqueline F. Brown, Ph.D., Prince Georges County Chief Administrative Officer, will serve as COG President in 2007 after being appointed by the COG Board during its annual membership and awards luncheon. Redella S. Pepper, City of Alexandria Council Member, and Adrian Fenty, D.C. Mayor-elect will serve as Vice Presidents. Hilda M. Barg, Prince William County Supervisor, will serve as Secretary-Treasurer. In addition to coporate officers, the COG Board will appoint a chair and two vice chairs at its January meeting.

Keynote Speaker Offers Tips for Affordable Housing
Considering a systematic program can help local governments address affordable housing in the metropolitan Washington area, according to former HUD Secretary and San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros. As the keynote speaker during COG's Annual Membership and Awards Luncheon, Cisneros told officials about seven key steps including working to end homelessness, as well as helping all persons achieve home ownership through a hierarchy of measures including housing vouchers and other programs. As Chairman of CityView, Cisneros has helped recharge depressed areas of large metropolitan cities by producing high-quality, affordable housing for thousands of working families.
