Aerial Study Shows Traffic Conditions Have Worsened in Three Years
A new aerial traffic study released by the Transportation Planning Board (TPB) shows the Washington region’s freeway system has become significantly more crowded over the past three years. Those on the road between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. experienced a 64 percent increase in congestion -- the biggest increase noted from 2002 to 2005. On a more positive note, however, the study found some examples where highway upgrades added capacity and improved traffic flow. The full report is available for download on COG's website.

TPB Report Provides Reccomendations for MetroAccess
The region’s public transit service for the disabled suffers from several shortcomings that could be remedied with some simple solutions, shows a report approved for transmission to WMATA. The report, “Improving Demand Responsive Services for People with Disabilities in the Washington Region,” is the first comprehensive study of the MetroAccess system operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

ENVIRONMENT

MWAQC Releases Second Edition of Air Quality Newsletter
The new Air Currents newsletter is available with updates on air quality planning and progress in recent months. The current issue details state air quality initiatives, an Environmental Protection Agency proposal to lower the p.m. daily standard, and diesel emission reduction strategies.

HOUSING

COG Helps Launch Emergency Shelters Directory
The latest edition of the region’s most comprehensive guide for emergency assistance is now available to government agencies, elected officials, non-profit agencies and volunteers. The "2006 Emergency Food, Shelter and Health Care Directory," released by InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington, is expected to assist at least 300,000 families and individuals in getting the help they need. A searchable online version of the document will be available in the spring. Government employees may request a copy of the directory by contacting Gary Givens.

Housing Trust Fund Receives $500,000 Gift
A new half million-dollar investment will enable the Washington Area Housing Trust Fund to offer affordable housing to more residents of the metropolitan region. A five year, low-interest loan provided by the Bank of America Greater Washington will fund predevelopment and other short term loans necessary to secure property in today’s competitive real estate environment.
