Crime Report Reveals Significant Decrease in Homicides and Motor Vehicle Theft
Serious crime in metropolitan Washington is on the decline, with the rate of homicides and thefts occurring at rates below the national average, according to a report released by COG. The 2006 Report on Crime and Crime Control shows the number of homicides in the region fell by almost 12 percent between 2005 and 2006, while car thefts dropped almost 15 percent.
Thomas Manger, Montgomery County Police Chief and Police Chiefs Committee Chair, told The Washington Post that improved communication and information-sharing among law enforcement agencies led to the decline.
Commercial Development Rises Sharply, Report Finds
The Washington Nationals Stadium in D.C. and a mixed use project in Arlington County helped push up the amount of new commercial
construction in the region at a rate not seen in four years, according to COG's annual Commercial Construction Indicators report. Developers broke ground on 33.9 million square feet of
commercial space, an increase of 39 percent over last year's numbers. The report also evidences a push toward transit-oriented development, with 35 percent of all new projects located in near transit stations.
“As the region’s population and job growth continues to climb, this renewed focus on sound, sustainable development is an important component in making sure our thriving metropolitan area remains the best place to live and work,” said COG Executive Director Dave Robertson.
