Connolly Presented Award at NARC Conference
Guiding emergency preparedness planning, spearheading a push for Metro dedicated funding, and leading an effort to increase telecommuting were a just few of the accomplishments that led the National Association of Regional Councils to honor Gerald E. Connolly,
Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. During its annual meeting in Orlando, NARC presented Connolly with the 2007 Tom Bradley Leadership Award. NARC presents the award each year to an outstanding local official who demonstrates leadership excellence and devotion in advocating regional concepts, approaches, and programs.
Report Provides Snapshot of Region's Homeless
A report released this month reveals a slight decrease in the overall number of homeless people in the area, marking the first decline in three years. COG's Homeless Enumeration Report, which tallies the area's
homeless population on a single day, counted 11,762 people in COG’s major jurisdictions who are homeless, compared with 12,126 in 2006. The decline is the first since 2004, and coincides with an increase in the number of formerly homeless who moved into stable settings known as permanent supportive housing.
New Report Shows Local Arts Support 45,000 Jobs
A new study reveals patrons of the arts and nonprofit arts organizations pumped $2.15 billion into the local economy and supported
45,000 full-time jobs. The report, released by COG and the
Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington, demonstrates how critical the arts are to the economy of the National Capital Region.
Local Jurisdictions To Save Millions After Reverse Auction
The region's first natural gas reverse auction led to agreements that will save local governments millions of dollars in natural gas supply.
In a bid for the largest cooperative purchase of natural gas on the Mid Atlantic Region, natural gas suppliers participated in an online auction to contract with 24 jurisdictions and entities for three years of service.
The auction was arranged to help reduce costs for local jurisdictions and their taxpayers through volume buying, and was coordinated by the D.C. Office of Contracting and Procurement in conjunction with COG's Cooperative Purchasing Program.
