Foster Parents Honored by COG and Freddie Mac Foundation
COG and the Freddie Mac Foundation paid tribute to hundreds of area foster parents during its sixth annual Foster Parent Appreciation Gala held at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington D.C. on Saturday, May 17. The event was an opportunity for elected officials to honor outstanding foster families, and drew a crowd that included foster and adoptive parents, family members, elected officials, and social services administrators.

HOMELESS SERVICES

Almost No Change in the Region's Homeless Population
The number of homeless individuals in the metropolitan Washington region has remained consistent over the past three years according to the COG Homeless Enumeration Report, which was released at the COG Board of Directors meeting in May. During the meeting, D.C. Council Member and COG Human Services Planning Committee Chair Tommy Wells spoke about a new program to reduce homelessness being launched in the District called the Housing First approach, which places homeless people in homes instead of emergency shelters and provides them with supportive services immediately.

TRANSPORTATION

Over 7,000 People Register for Bike to Work Day
Despite the rain, scores of bicyclists pedaled their way into 26 pit stops across the D.C. region, Friday, May 16, 2008, to support Bike to Work Day. Over 7,000 people registered for this year's Bike to Work Day, sponsored jointly by COG's Commuter Connections program and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. The event brings together area commuters to promote bicycling to work as a healthy and environmentally-friendly alternative to drive-alone commuting.

Commuter Connections Free Services Provide Relief from High Gas Prices
As gas prices continue to rise, area residents are in search of smart and effective solutions to the tremendous expense of driving alone to work and are increasingly turning to Commuter Connections for help. The program is empowering solo drivers to slash their commuting costs and go green by sharing a ride, bicycling or trying public transportation.
