New Annual Report, Directory Published
COG recently published its 2007 Annual Report and 2008 Regional Directory. The Annual Report summarizes COG's many accomplishments during its 50th anniversary year. The updated directory lists COG's leadership in 2008 as well as officials in COG's 21 member jurisdictions and state and federal elected officials.

ENVIRONMENT

Regional Green Building Program Honored
The American Society of Civil Engineers-National Capital Section recognized the COG regional green building program with its 2008 Sustainability Award. The award honors private-industry outreach initiatives or public legislation and programs in the metropolitan Washington area that advance or promote the responsible and sustainable development of infrastructure, the built-environment or the conservation of natural resources.

MWAQC Releases New Air Quality Plan
The Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee has approved a new air quality plan to reduce fine particle pollution in the region. MWAQC’s new plan goes beyond Clean Air Act requirements in an effort to gain further reductions in fine particle pollution.

COG Questions Construction of Virginia Power Plant
The COG Board submitted public comments to the Commonwealth of Virginia questioning plans to build a coal-fired power plant in southwestern Virginia’s Wise County.  Board members said the plant could slow progress on reducing greenhouse gases in the National Capital Region.

PLANNING

Greater Washington 2050 Launches New Web Site
For up-to-date information on Greater Washington 2050, COG has launched www.greaterwashington2050.org. Greater Washington 2050 is a new regional initiative to improve the quality of life for Washington area residents in the next 50 years by fostering stronger regional awareness, leadership and action today and in the next few years.

TRANSPORTATION

Street Smart Campaign Draws Region's Attention
The Street Smart pedestrian safety campaign has received a great deal of attention since its kickoff event at the busy Route 7 corridor in Fairfax County in early March. With pedestrian fatalities on the rise in recent years, regional leaders have joined together again for Street Smart, which combines stepped up law enforcement targeted to areas with high numbers of pedestrian-related incidents and public awareness efforts to promote safer behavior behind the wheel and at the curb.

Regional Toll Study Released
The TPB's Task Force on Value Pricing released its study on the effects highway tolls would have on the region. The study evaluated alternative scenarios for a regional network of variably-priced lanes combined with extensive express bus services. Arlington County Board Member Chris Zimmerman, Chairman of the Task Force, reminded the TPB members that the study "is not a proposal, it is a 'what if' study that provides insight into the implications of tolling on our region."
