TRANSPORTATION

Disability Awareness Day Stresses Transportation Needs
Members of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) joined people with disabilities from across metropolitan Washington to raise awareness about the important role of accessible transportation. To highlight the typical workday commute of people with disabilities, several travel teams—each including a person with a disability, a regional transportation leader from the TPB and a member of the media—made trips together on public transit to a press conference held at COG. The Disability Awareness Day was sponsored by the Transportation Planning Board’s Access for All advisory committee.

Leaders Urge More Organizations to Telework
At the Senior Executives Forum on Telework held October 12, area business leaders and elected officials urged their peers to embrace telework as new figures from the 2004 State of the Commute Survey were released. The latest figures show a total of 320,000 employees currently working from home, and survey data indicates that 420,000 employees throughout the region would telecommute if given the opportunity. The State of the Commute Survey is conducted every three years by Commuter Connections. An executive summary of the 2004 report will be published next year.

HUMAN SERVICES

National Advocacy Summit Trains Foster Parents
At a two-day legislative and public policy summit to be held October 29-30, COG and the National Foster Parent Association will provide in-depth advocacy training to help foster parents become effective voices both in their communities and in the shaping of local and national child welfare policy. The National Advocacy Summit will also include sessions to educate foster parents about issues impacting their ability to care for traumatized children.

PUBLIC HEALTH

Area Health Officials Discuss Regional Flu Preparations
Public health officials from the District of Columbia, suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia convened at COG for a press briefing to discuss steps being taken at the regional level to ensure the health of all residents throughout flu season. Members of COG’s Health Officials Committee addressed issues associated with an unexpected flu vaccine shortage and emergency rules restricting the vaccine to those at highest risk from the virus.

ENVIRONMENT

COG Seeks Public Input on Noise Compatibility for National Airport
A public meeting held at COG opened the floor to area residents to discuss noise levels at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The meeting was arranged by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority to seek public feedback on a series of proposed changes to the airport’s take-off and landing procedures. The Noise Compatibility Study, conducted by COG's Part 150 Committee in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations, is designed to forecast future noise contours at Reagan National and to examine possible actions to reduce community noise impacts. The compatibility study was last revised in 1993.
