November Gala Will Celebrate 50 Years of Partnership and Progress
There is still time for jurisdictions
to reserve tables or purchase tickets at COG's 50th Anniversary Gala, where Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine, Maryland Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown and District of Columbia Mayor Adrian Fenty
will join more than 250 local, state and federal officials and business and civic leaders next month to celebrate 50 years of partnership and progress. COG's 50th Anniversary Gala on November 15 will also bring together many friends and supporters in the private and civic sectors for a night of networking and fun.
Greening of the Region, Preparedness Focus of Recent COG Outreach
Hundreds of the region's leaders learned about COG's environmental and homeland security programs through two special events in October. At the Greater Washington Board of Trade's annual Potomac Conference, "Green as Competitive Advantage," a COG booth provided information on various programs that address green building, climate change, air quality and other related issues. Informational materials focused on the success of programs in Montgomery County, Arlington County and many other area jurisdictions. During a one-day workshop held by Freddie Mac for the company's employees, COG staff also distributed informational materials and answered questions about preparing for emergencies.
Area Residents Encouraged to Conserve Water During Drought Watch
Residents were asked to limit watering lawns, take shorter showers and repair leaking toilets as part of a drought "watch" put into effect in October. As the region faced unusually dry conditions, COG's Drought Coordination Committee issued the watch to help ensure that water supplies for the region remained adequate.
Bonus Density Discussed as Effective Tool for Increasing Affordable Housing Units
Bonus density, a strategy that rewards developers for including affordable housing units in new projects, was the topic of discussion at a recent Washington Area Housing Partnership forum. The event featured presentations on incentives that have helped make many of the area's jurisdictions more affordable for workers like firefighters and teachers. Discussions were moderated by David Bowers, Local Director of Enterprise Community Partners, and featured a keynote speech by Douglas Bibby, President of the National Multi Housing Council.
Funding For Transit Should be Top Priority, Vice Chair Tells Maryland Legislators
Funding for Metro remains the most critical transportation need in metropolitan Washington, COG Board Vice Chairman and Montgomery County Council Member Michael Knapp told members of the Maryland Senate and House. In testimony before several committees, Knapp encouraged lawmakers to pass legislation that would take the region closer to obtaining dedicated federal funding. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, which provides more than 1 million trips a day, is the nation's only mass transit system that does not have dedicated funding.
