Nominate your Peers for COG's Annual Awards
Last year, Arlington County Board Member Jay Fisette won the Scull Award (COG's highest honor presented annually to an area elected official) and the Alice Ferguson Foundation was honored with the Regional Partnership Award for a private sector organization that contributed significantly in support of a COG program or policy. COG is currently seeking nominations for this year's Annual Membership and Awards Luncheon on December 10. Submitting a nomination is easy and it is a great way to acknowledge the positive impact that you or your colleagues are making in the National Capital Region.

HUMAN SERVICES

Area Nonprofits, COG Board Call for Continued Charitable Giving from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae
At its October meeting, the COG Board passed a resolution urging federal regulators to continue Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae's substantial charitable giving programs in the National Capital Region. COG and other area nonprofits have formed a coalition to make sure regulators don't lose sight of the vital impact that Freddie and Fannie’s charitable giving has had on thousands of families in the Washington region. Last year, the two corporations donated over $47 million to area nonprofits and community groups.

TRANSPORTATION

COG Applauds Passage of Metro Funding Measure by U.S. Senate
COG applauds the passage of legislation in the U.S. Senate that would authorize $1.5 billion over 10 years in matching funding for improvements needed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. The legislation is expected to be signed by President Bush soon. COG first called attention to Metro’s funding shortfalls in 2005 when it worked with the Greater Washington Board of Trade and Federal City Council to sponsor a blue ribbon panel of transportation funding experts to examine the issue. Board Chair Knapp relayed COG's message during interviews on News Channel 8 and the Kojo Nnamdi Show on WAMU.
