This special program is being specifically tailored for policy leaders in the National Capital Region. The webinar will cover the challenges facing local government stormwater programs and provide local examples of how various governments in the region are meeting those challenges. Time on the agenda has been set aside for participants to have an opportunity to ask questions.
The management of stormwater is emerging as one of the most complex environmental challenges for local governments today. Local governments must adapt to changing federal and state regulations that are imposing new requirements for new growth areas and re-development of existing land. They must do more to reduce the nutrients and sediment that flow in urban runoff into local streams and rivers and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay – as reflected in new stormwater permit provisions. And they must determine how to pay for increased responsibilities in difficult financial circumstances.
The webinar will be conducted by COG staff and experts from COG’s member governments These COG members are leaders in the pursuit of stormwater initiatives and will be asked to share some of their perspectives and best practices with participants. A primary focus will be on new programs and initiatives, and how they are addressing paying for this increased level of effort.
Each of the presenters will participate in a question and answer session with participants. After welcoming remarks from COG Board Chair Harrison, Barbara Favola, Arlington County Board Member and Chair of COG’s Chesapeake Bay and Water Resources Policy Committee, is scheduled to moderate the webinar.
