Description:	Today’s economy compels planners, developers and policy-makers to seek innovative ways to ensure that planning and investment decisions create affordable, sustainable communities.  Join MWCOG for the Innovations for Sustainable Communities Workshop focused on evaluating housing and transportation development decisions using combined cost measures. Although housing is the single largest budget item for most American households, transportation costs are a close second, and in many instances, are beginning to rival housing costs.  This workshop will look at tools planners can use to measure the impact investments have on household budgets, and help decision-makers wisely invest taxpayer dollars …while helping individuals’ wallets.  Participants will also learn about – and be able to provide feedback to – HUD new planning tools: the Location Affordability Index and the My Transportation Cost Calculator, which are being designed to help planners, consumers, and policy-makers make more informed decisions about where to build and live.  Presenters will include representatives from the Manhattan Strategy Group, the lead contractor for the Initiative, and the Center for Neighborhood Technology, the creator of the H+T® Affordability Index, which is the launching point for HUD’s Location Affordability Index. The Housing and Transportation Affordability Initiative is a federal partnership between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities and the Department of Transportation (DOT) to explore the links between housing and transportation to determine strategies to decrease the combined cost burden.
