They are responsible for maintaining the public health through services and programs for communicable disease control, maternal and child health, school health, and environmental health.
The Health Officials Committee is currently working to improve the region's emergency preparedness by developing a regional disease syndromic surveillance system that will help area health departments and hospitals to share information and respond regionally and consistently to public health threats which by nature are not necessarily contained within individual jurisdictional boundaries. The Health Officials Committee is also the convener of the Health Work Group and provides core communication oversight and liaison for the Regional Incident Communication and Coordination System. The Health Work Group is the planning body responsible for regional emergency coordination planning and updating the Regional Emergency Coordination Plan (RECP) for R-ESFs #6, 8, 11 and 15. To confirm meeting dates and times, contact Chevelle Glymph, Chief of Health & Substance Abuse Programs, at (202) 962-3266.
