Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee - Description

The Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee (MWAQC) (see Map) is the entity certified by the mayor of the District of Columbia and the governors of Maryland and Virginia to prepare an air quality plan for the DC-MD-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area under Section 174 of the federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. MWAQC members are elected officials of COG member jurisdictions plus members from Charles, Calvert, and Stafford counties; the air management and transportation directors of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia; members of the Maryland and Virginia General Assemblies; and the chair of the Transportation Planning Board. See the bylaws  and work plan for additional detail.  The Air and Climate Public Advisory Committee (ACPAC) serves at the citizen advisory group for MWAQC; the MWAQC TAC serves as the technical advisory committee.  The Climate, Energy and Environment Policy Committee makes recommendations on regional greenhouse gas reduction policy to the COG Board of Directors. 

In executing its responsibilities, MWAQC coordinates air quality planning activities among COG, other external committees, and the Transporation Planning Board; reviews policies; resolves policy differences; and adopts an air quality plan for transmittal to the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.  View the current MWAQC workplan.  MWAQC subcommittees include the Executive Committee, the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), and the Air and Climate Public Advisory Committee (AQPAC).
