May 7 is Annual Bike to Work Day Bicycling is an effective tool for reducing congestion, improving air quality and providing a healthy alternative for commuters who choose to use it as a means of transportation to and from work. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) is partnering with the Washington Area Bicyclists Association (WABA) to increase awareness throughout the National Capital region of bicycling to work as a viable option for commuters.   This year's Bike to Work Day will include "pit stops" at 19 locations throughout the region, from North Bethesda and Bowie to Leesburg and Vienna. Those participating in the event include a host of local government officials and special guests, including Rep. Christopher Van Hollen (D-Md); Douglas M. Duncan, Executive, Montgomery County; Marsha Kaiser, Planning Director, Maryland Department of Transportation; and Catherine M. Hudgins, Supervisor, Fairfax County. The event is scheduled to take place between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., with times varying by location.   The event will include free T-shirts, snacks, public speakers, chances to win bicycles and other prizes. The employer with the largest number of registrants will receive a free lunch for participating employees.
