Kids Need Families Like Yours

COG's Child Welfare Program includes two related initiatives: the Kids Need Families online resource and the Families Like Yours Campaign.

Kids Need Families is an online community and resource center for current and future foster and adoptive parents in the region. The Kids Need Families Facebook page hosts the PicMe Project, a recruitment tool for adoptive parents to find foster youth who have been longing for a forever family. Teens share their stories and their dreams in a 60-second professionally produced slideshow featuring photos by Joan Brady Photography, and quotes from the child. Each PicMe story is released on social media to be viewed, liked, and shared. The more people who view these stories, the better chance the child has of finding the perfect match.

Once each PicMe story is launched on social media, The PicMe Network, comprised of close to 100 individuals and organizations, share the PicMe with their friends and customers across their social media platforms and by word of mouth.

The Families Like Yours Campaign focuses on recruiting, recognizing, and retaining foster parents to care for abused and neglected children in the region. A program of COG’s Child Welfare Program, the campaign partners with local and state child welfare agencies in and around the nation’s capital to recognize the region’s Foster Parents of the Year on an annual basis. At a moment’s notice, foster parents receive abused and neglected children for an unspecified number of weeks, months, or years. By opening their homes and hearts, foster parents play a vital role in helping children and families in crisis heal.

View all of the Foster Parents of the Year videos on the Kids Need Families Facebook page.

Since the program's previous funder is no longer involved in charitable giving, COG is raising funds to continue to produce Foster Parent of the Year short-form documentaries, and honor them at a regional celebration and dinner. This important work must be sustained through private donations.

Please help support this important activity with a tax-deductible gift. If your company or organization is interested in joining as a highly visible Premier or Signature sponsor, please call the Child Welfare Program Coordinator at (202) 962-3263.
