COG Video Series: Collaboration in Action

Introducing Collaboration in Action, COG's video series hosted by Executive Director Clark Mercer. The series spotlights COG's work with member jurisdictions and private, nonprofit, and civic organizations on a wide variety of programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life for everyone in our DMV region. Come along as Clark takes you behind the scenes of several of our initiatives, spreading the word about the value of regional partnership and highlighting the leaders and experts in our network that are making a positive impact in our communities.

COG Podcast
Prior to Collaboration in Action, COG produced a podcast, Think Regionally, to raise awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focus on solutions. The podcast, which was hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, featured local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

The TPB’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Subcommittee recently co-hosted a regional network meeting of Safe Routes to School of Greater Washington. The TPB and Safe Routes to School share goals for improving bicycle and pedestrian safety, and several TPB funding opportunities support projects aimed at making it safer for kids to walk or bike to school.

The TPB’s February 15 meeting ran a half-hour over schedule as the board crafted a scope for the future work of its Long-Range Plan Task Force. The board also discussed the regional impacts of Metro’s proposed FY 2018 operating budget.

Prince George’s County wanted to build a new walking and biking trail in the busy Central Avenue corridor. The TPB’s Transportation/Land-Use Connections (TLC) Program helped jumpstart the project.

At its January 18 meeting, the TPB approved the newly appointed members to its Citizens Advisory Committee for 2017. The CAC’s two main charges are to promote public involvement in transportation planning for the region and to provide independent, region-oriented citizen advice to the TPB on transportation plans and issues.

TPB planners are working on a new approach to analyzing the region’s long-range transportation plan to satisfy long-standing federal Title VI requirements and Environmental Justice guidelines. These federal measures aim to protect minority and low-income populations from discrimination and disproportionate adverse impacts of federally funded programs.

The TPB took a few formal actions at its January 18 meeting, including appointing new members to its Citizens Advisory Committee. It also discussed the next phase of work of its Long-Range Plan Task Force. The board deferred until February a final vote to endorse a map that will aid in assessing the impacts of the region’s transportation plans on low-income and minority communities.
