Introducing Collaboration in Action, COG's video series hosted by Executive Director Clark Mercer. The series spotlights COG's work with member jurisdictions and private, nonprofit, and civic organizations on a wide variety of programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life for everyone in our DMV region. Come along as Clark takes you behind the scenes of several of our initiatives, spreading the word about the value of regional partnership and highlighting the leaders and experts in our network that are making a positive impact in our communities.

COG Podcast

Prior to Collaboration in Action, COG produced a podcast, Think Regionally, to raise awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focus on solutions. The podcast, which was hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, featured local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    The effects of the October 1973 oil embargo hit Washington area commuters hard. Gas prices topped 50 cents a gallon for the first time ever. Long lines formed at gas stations as fuel supplies dwindled. Getting to and from work by car suddenly became much more expensive -- in some cases, prohibitively so.

    The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) will dedicate one of its most important meeting spaces to the life and work of Ron Kirby, who served as COG's director of transportation planning for more than 26 years until his sudden, unexpected death in November 2013.

    On June 27, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments announced Kanti Srikanth as its new director of transportation planning. Srikanth will lead the team of nearly 60 planners, engineers, and other staff who support the ongoing work of the Transportation Planning Board.

    The City of Falls Church wants to capitalize on its proximity to Metro by attracting more residential and commercial development along Washington Street, one of the city's two main commercial corridors. But much of the thoroughfare lies beyond the quarter-mile radius from transit that planners traditionally consider optimal for encouraging transit-oriented development.
