The series spotlights COG's work with member jurisdictions and private, nonprofit, and civic organizations on a wide variety of programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life for everyone in our DMV region. Come along as Clark takes you behind the scenes of several of our initiatives, spreading the word about the value of regional partnership and highlighting the leaders and experts in our network that are making a positive impact in our communities.

COG Podcast

Prior to Collaboration in Action, COG produced a podcast, Think Regionally, to raise awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focus on solutions. The podcast, which was hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, featured local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    "State of the Commute" Survey: Mode Choice Depends Largely On Where You Live

    The results of the latest "State of the Commute" survey, conducted earlier this year by the Transportation Planning Board's Commuter Connections program, confirm that the travel mode people use to get to and from work each day depends in large part on where they live. In the region's core jurisdictions, the District of Columbia, Arlington, and Alexandria, less than half of commuters drive alone to work each day, while more than a third take transit, a figure that is twice the regional average.     Public May Be Open to More Tolls on Area Roadways, But New Federal Rules Limit Scope

    A regional network of express toll lanes on area highways -- giving drivers and transit vehicles a way to bypass traffic back-ups in regular lanes, especially during peak hours -- could garner enough public support to be implemented in the Washington region, according to a two-year study by the Transportation Planning Board.

    Fifteen local transportation projects in the Washington region will receive funding under a new, consolidated federal program aimed at supporting projects that expand travel choices like bicycling and walking, or that make other enhancements like mitigating the environmental impacts of transportation facilities.

    Action Taken to Update Region's Long-Range Transportation Plan

    The Transportation Planning Board in July approved 20 major roadway or bicycle and pedestrian projects in Virginia and the District of Columbia to add to the region's constrained long-range transportation plan, or CLRP.

    Between now and August 23, stakeholders, advocacy groups, and interested members of the general public are invited to review and comment on the Transportation Planning Board's draft Regional Transportation Priorities Plan, the culmination of a multi-year effort to identify the best strategies for addressing the region's most pressing transportation challenges.

    Nine New Projects to Advance Better Coordination of Transportation and Land-Use

    Nine local jurisdictions in the Washington region will receive technical assistance under the Transportation Planning Board's Transportation/Land-Use Connections Program for projects that strive to enable transportation systems and development patterns to support one another more effectively. The TLC Program has, over the years, provided technical assistance for projects that explore everything from ways to promote transit-oriented development to making roadways safer for cyclists and pedestrian​
