Twenty community leaders from around the Washington region recently attended a two-day workshop hosted by the Transportation Planning Board to learn about how transportation decisions are made in the region and how to become more involved in the decision-making process.

Metropolitan Washington has made much environmental headway to be proud of. For example by 2011 the District of Columbia was the “state” with the most LEED certified green building per capita and it also beat out New York City as the U.S. city with most green buildings .

UK energy independence: In the US when we talk about energy independence we typically are referring to reducing our dependence on foreign oil . The logic behind this is that when our energy sources are under the control of other countries (some of which we don’t have the best relations with) we’re much more vulnerable to energy shortages and/or price hikes.

The Street Smart Spring 2012 campaign launches with a focus on increasing enforcement and education efforts. Preliminary data shows that pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities in the region decreased significantly in 2011.

How innovative is your metro area? Jonathan Rothwell over at The New Republic breaks down some new OECD data on inventors per capita and applications for patents by country and by metro area. Rothwell notes that ten metro areas which comprise only about two percent of the world’s population account for 24 percent of all patent applications!
