WASHINGTON - Then-Virginia Governor James S. Gilmore signed into law on May 31, 2001 a groundbreaking public-private partnership to get cars off the road in areas of the state hardest hit by traffic congestion. Nearly two years later, companies who participated in the program are finding other benefits to the programs they put in place.

Nearly 6,000 children are in foster care on any given day in the metropolitan Washington area. Foster parents are loving people who give their hearts and homes to children. In honor of the region’s foster parents, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Freddie Mac Foundation (sponsors of the “Wednesday’s Child” adoption program) are presenting a gala evening of awards, dinner, and entertainment to recognize those persons who provide nurturing and guidance to children in need.​

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) will kick off its annual summer reading program with the Washington Redskins for the fourth consecutive year. Several players, including quarterback Gibran Hamdan and wide receiver Darnerien McCants, will read to children from Old Bridge Elementary School at the Chinn Park Regional Library in Prince William, Virginia.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) third annual count of the region’s homeless population on a single day indicated an increase in homelessness among families with children, but suggested only a slight increase overall in the size of the homeless population within the region.

According to a 2001 survey by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), 15 percent of the workforce in the Washington region telework at least one day per week, up from 12 percent in 1998. To assist local businesses and government agencies in establishing telecommuting programs, COG’s Commuter Connections is presenting a series of free one-day seminars. Topics address such issues as understanding telework as a business strategy, overcoming resistance and barriers to implementing a program, managing employees in a telework environment, and others.

Bicycle commuting can benefit both employees and employers by improving employee health and fitness, lowering commuting, parking and health care costs, and increasing productivity.
