Emergency Management

The metropolitan Washington region faces a variety of threats—from man-made disasters to weather events like snowstorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Local, state, and federal emergency managers regularly work together at COG to make sure that the region is better equipped to prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate against natural and man-made disasters.

COG supports emergency managers in their efforts to enhance coordination through regional exercises and trainings as well as joint meetings with public safety officials. COG has also helped emergency managers enhance interoperable communications, such as the development of a network connecting the region’s Emergency Operations Centers. The network connects the centers digitally through a government-owned fiber network that does not share bandwidth with the regular internet, increasing speed and reliability.
