Community Planning & Services News Panel of Area Leaders Discuss Greater Washington 2050 on WAMU
Members of the Greater Washington 2050 Coalition—Arlington County Board Chair Barbara Favola, Frederick Alderman Alan Imhoff, Greater Washington Board of Trade President and CEO Jim Dinegar, Coalition for Smarter Growth Executive Director Stewart Schwartz—and COG Executive Director David Robertson were guests on WAMU's The Kojo Nnamdi Show on June 22. They focused on the big challenges facing the region over the next half century and discussed how area government, business and civic leaders are working together to shape a more competitive, sustainable and vibrant future through the Greater Washington 2050 Initiative. Foster Parents Honored by COG and the Freddie Mac Foundation On May 30, several COG members (including COG Chair Penny Gross & COG Vice Chair Kwame Brown pictured) participated in the 2009 Metropolitan Washington Foster Parent Appreciation Gala, an annual celebration sponsored by COG and the Freddie Mac Foundation to award the hard work and dedication of the region’s foster parents. COG Recruiting Stakeholders for New Policy Committee COG is seeking to fill membership openings on its new Climate, Energy and Environment Policy Committee (CEEPC) with representatives from federal/regional public agencies, electric/gas utilities, environmental/energy/nonprofit groups, business groups, and university/academic institutions. The CEEPC is the principal policy adviser to the COG Board of Directors for climate change and energy policy issues. Report Highlights Health Disparities Throughout Region COG and the Washington Grantmakers (WG) released a report on June 29 indicating that health can differ quite dramatically depending upon where a person lives in the region. Officials Hold Fireworks Safety News Conference and Demonstration On June 24, fire officials from across the region conducted a fireworks safety news conference and safety demonstration at the George Washington Masonic Temple in Alexandria, Virginia. They addressed the dangers associated with the use of illegal fireworks and showed how fireworks are mishandled and improperly used. To learn more about the event and view photos, click here. In a crucial step for the project’s future, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board voted unanimously at its June meeting to advance the light rail Purple Line for inclusion in the 2009 Constrained Long Range Transportation Plan (CLRP). TPB and FTA Hold Priority Bus Conference On June 24, the TPB and the Federal Transit Administration held a conference on improving the region’s transit system by implementing priority bus transit.
