Greater Washington 2050 Kicks Off Public Outreach/Listening Phase Beginning in May, COG is holding presentations on Greater Washington 2050 throughout the region to discuss results of a recent survey and to find out what area leaders and citizens think about the initiative's goals and plans. Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman and Greater Washington 2050 Coalition Chairman Sharon Bulova and COG Executive Director David Robertson appeared on NewsTalk on News Channel 8 on May 5 to discuss the initiative. Fisette Named Chair of New COG Policy Committee Jay Fisette, Vice Chair of the Arlington County Board, has been named chair of COG’s new Climate, Energy and Environment Policy Committee. His appointment was announced at the COG Board’s May meeting by COG Board Chair Penny Gross. The committee will provide leadership on climate change, energy, green building, alternative fuels, solid waste and recycling issues, and will help support area governments as they work together to meet the goals outlined in COG's National Capital Region Climate Change Report. Area Students Honored at Clean Air Partners' Annual Meeting Clean Air Partners Annual Membership Meeting was held on May 12 at the Marian Koshland Science Museum in Washington, D.C. Following the Board Meeting – during which the group approved its FY 2010 Annual Work Plan and Budget – an awards presentation and reception was held to recognize the winners of the Clean Air Partners Air Quality Poster Contest. Capitalert Campaign Draws Attention to Emergency Alert Systems Area governments have launched Capitalert, a free service that links the public to local emergency alert systems. Its current marketing campaign is aiming to increase awareness about these systems and boost e-mail and text message subscriptions. Each government operates their own emergency alert system. Aerial Survey Highlights Region's Worst Traffic Chokepoints At the May meeting of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board, members were briefed on findings from the 2008 aerial traffic congestion survey. While the survey showed worsening traffic conditions in some areas, traffic congestion in the region has decreased overall since 2005. The survey, which is conducted every three years, uses aerial photos to measure the number of cars per mile per lane on the region's 300+ mile freeway system and indicates changes in congestion locations and durations in comparison to earlier surveys.
