A Challenge for Our Region

The management of stormwater is emerging as one of the most complex environmental challenges for local governments today. Local governments must adapt to changing federal and state regulations that are imposing new requirements for new growth areas and re-development of existing land. They must do more to reduce the nutrients and sediment that flow in urban runoff into local streams and rivers and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay as reflected in new stormwater permit provisions. And they must determine how to pay for increased responsibilities in difficult financial circumstances.

COG Regional Stormwater Factsheet Released June 2012

COG staff have prepared a Regional Stormwater Management factsheet entitled  Protecting Local and Regional Water Quality - Stormwater Management in the Metropolitan Washington Region.  This factsheet provides an overview of the region’s stormwater management programs, noting accomplishments and challenges.
