Fairfax City usually gets all of its water from the City of Fairfax Department of Utilities (DU). The DU maintains substantial interconnections with the Fairfax County Water Authority system for supplies during emergencies or shortages. The City of Fairfax DU takes water out of Goose Creek. The city's Goose Creek Reservoir has a 200 million gallon capacity. A back-up, Beaverdam Creek Reservoir, has a 1.3 billion gallon capacity and is used in case of drought. The city has its own water treatment facility in Loudoun County, 22 miles northwest of the city. The facility is capable of producing up to 18 million gallons per day.
