Much of Fairfax County gets its water directly from Fairfax Water (FW). The section of north-central Fairfax County adjacent to Falls Church gets its water from the Public Utilities Division of the City of Falls Church Department of Environmental Services. The City of Fairfax Department of Utilities serves the city and small portions of Fairfax County contiguous to the city. The Town of Vienna Department of Public Works serves contiguous portions of Fairfax County. FCWA takes water out of its Occoquan Reservoir on the Occoquan River and out of the Potomac River at an intake above Great Falls. A small percentage of FW's water also comes from wells or is purchased from other jurisdictions. FW has four water treatment plants. The Corbalis Treatment Plant on the Potomac can treat up to 150 million gallons per day (mgd). The Occoquan/Lorton treatment plants on the Occoquan River can treat up to 112 mgd. These three older plants will be replaced by the new Griffith treatment plant, which will have a capacity of 120 mgd, expandable to 160 mgd.
