TPB Community Leadership Institute

What is the Community Leadership Institute?

The Community Leadership Institute, or CLI, is an educational program consisting of three interrelated modules that, together, encourage successful community leaders to get involved in transportation-related decision-making at all levels.

Over the course of these workshops, participants learn how, where, and when transportation decisions are made in the Washington region. Sessions include information about the various planning processes at the state, regional, and local levels. The CLI uses case studies and interactive group activities to emphasize key themes for successful involvement in decision-making. Experiential learning activities provide basic information on regional planning procedures and illustrate how transportation projects can either be propelled forward or stalled by such factors as funding availability and political circumstances.

The CLI is facilitated by current WMATA Board Member Kathy Porter, who previously served as the Chair of the TPB and as the Mayor of Takoma Park, Maryland.

Who participates in the CLI?

CLI participants represent organizations that have been recognized as forces for change in their communities, including leaders of civic groups, homeowners associations, business organizations and local citizen advisory boards. Elected officials from throughout the region, as well as interest groups, are invited to nominate individuals for upcoming sessions. Graduates of the CLI are also encouraged to nominate individuals for upcoming sessions.

When is the CLI?

The next CLI will be held in the fall of 2013. Stay tuned for more information! If you are interested in receiving an emailed update about an upcoming CLI, contact Deb Kerson Bilek.
