Regional Bicycle & Pedestrian Priorities

Every year, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Subcommittee selects a list of top priority unfunded bicycle and pedestrian projects.  At its September 16, 2008 meeting the Subcommittee approved the most recent list.  Previous lists were adopted in December 2007, and December 2006.

The list is a statement of priorities among the unfunded or partially funded bicycle and pedestrian projects from local, state, agency, and regional plans.  The list will be forwarded to the Transportation Planning Board with the recommendation of the Subcommittee that these projects should be funded in the FY 2010-15 Transportation Improvement Program. The ten priority projects are:

  • Metropolitan Branch Trail (D.C.) stretching 7.7 miles from Union Station to Silver Spring, parallel to the Red Line of the Metro.
  • MacArthur Boulevard Shared-Use Path and Shoulder (Montgomery County) running four miles from Rock Creek Trail to the Northwest Branch Park.
  • Henson Creek Trail (Prince George's County) extending north and south of the existing trail. In the north, the trail will be extended from Temple Hill Road to the Branch Avenue Metro. To the south, this trail will be extended from Oxon Hill Road into the Broad Creek Historic District on the Potomac.
  • Holmes Run Greenway Shared-Use Path Improvements (I-395/Van Dorn tunnels and N Ripley Street fair weather crossing)  (Alexandria) This project will rehabilitate the existing tunnel under I-395 and Van Dorn Street.
  • Arlington Boulevard Bikeway Improvements (Arlington County)  This project is for design and implementation of a series of bicycle and pedestrian safety and access improvements to the multi-use trail that parallels Arlington Boulevard in Arlington County, between the Fairfax County line to Pershing Drive.
  • Leesburg Pike Seven Corners to Alexandria Pedestrian Initiative (Fairfax County)  A pedestrian safety and access improvement project consisting of pedestrian and bus stop intersection improvement projects and completion of a continuous walkway on both sides of Route 7 from the Seven Corners interchange to Alexandria.
  • Loudoun County Parkway Shared-Use Path (Loudoun County)  Build a 4.4 mile shared-use path parallel to Loudoun County Parkway from Route 7 to Waxpool Road.
  • Monocacy River Greenway Phase I (Frederick County)  This planned trail will run down the Monocacy River stream valley.  The priority segment is the 11 miles between Tuscarora Creek and Ballenger Creek.
  • Old Bridge Road Sidewalk (Prince William County) between Cricket Lane and Mohican Lane.

The Subcommittee's previous priority list was submitted in December, 2007. One of the projects from that list, the Falls Road Shared-Use Path in Montgomery County, received full funding totaling $5,000,000. Four projects on the 2007 list received have received partial funding, totaling $2,870,000, since December 2007.
