Air Quality and Geography
in The Washington Region

The TPB is responsible for the air quality beyond its own metropolitan planning area. This area (shown below) which includes Charles and Calvert Counties in Maryland and Stafford County in Virginia, comprises the Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), and has been designated an air quality "serious non-attainment area" for its failure to meet federal ozone standards. It is this area that is the focus of air quality plans developed for the Washington region.
