COG’s Chesapeake Bay and Water Resources Policy Committee (CBPC) and staff toured Exelon’s Conowingo Dam in Darlington, Maryland in September to get a firsthand look at its renewable energy production, original 1928 turbines, and fish passage mechanisms. CBPC members discussed Exelon’s ongoing dam relicensing requirements and related fish and sediment studies. The changing sediment and nutrient loads behind the Susquehanna River’s hydroelectric dam system (Conowingo is the lowest most in a series of four dams on the Susquehanna River) will be a major issue to be addressed in the 2017 Mid-Point Assessment, when the Chesapeake Bay Program evaluates progress toward meeting nutrient and sediment reductions.
