At its monthly meeting, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) approved updates to four projects in the region’s Constrained Long-Range Transportation Plan (CLRP).

The changes include:

• Addition of a new I-95 Northbound HOT lane Exit Ramp at Russell Road in Prince William County
• Modifications to the I-66 Outside the Beltway HOT lanes project in Northern Virginia
• Modification of the completion date of the widening and replacement of the Governor Harry Nice Bridge in Maryland to 2023 instead of 2030
• Addition of the I-270 Innovative Congestion Management Project, which includes fourteen roadway improvements and innovative technologies and techniques, such as adaptive ramp metering, active traffic management, and virtual weigh stations

The project updates, submitted by the Virginia and Maryland departments of transportation, were released for a 30-day public comment period in September along with the results of the corresponding air quality analysis. Staff performed the air quality assessment and found that the projects meet all clean air requirements. Following a discussion of the public comments received and recommended responses, the board approved the results of the air quality analysis.

“Accepting these project updates in the region’s long-range transportation plan and ensuring that they meet air quality requirements is an important step,” said TPB Chairman and City of Rockville Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton. “In order for projects to receive federal funding, the TPB must approve their inclusion in the plan.”
