The TPB’s July meeting ran nearly a half-hour over schedule as board members discussed and ultimately voted to accept the recommendations of the TPB’s Long-Range Plan Task Force. The board also set Friday, September 22, as Car Free Day in the Washington region and heard from Virginia Railway Express (VRE) CEO Doug Allen about the commuter railroad’s role in the region over the past 25 years as well as its plans for future growth and expansion.

After a lengthy discussion at its July 19 meeting, the TPB accepted for further study the recommendations of its Long-Range Plan Task Force, a group set up in March to identify a limited set of large-scale transportation and land-use initiatives that could help make significantly greater progress toward achieving long-term regional transportation goals.

About every two years the TPB plays a key role in selecting and awarding federal grant funding to projects and initiatives throughout the region aimed at improving mobility for seniors and persons with disabilities. At a TPB-hosted forum on May 30, many of these grantees gathered to share their ideas and experiences for working to improve transportation for people with limited mobility.

At its most recent meeting, on June 7, the task force began the process of winnowing down a list of more than 80 different ideas it identified in brainstorm sessions held during its meetings in April and May. Those brainstorms followed the task force’s initial work of looking at existing regional transportation goals and identifying the region’s challenges in meeting them.
