The National Capital Region Tranportation Planning Board (TPB) is required under the provisions of the federal transportation bill, SAFETEA-LU, to include a Safety element in its long-range transportation plan.  That Safety element must incorporate and summarize elements of the State Strategic Highway Safety Plans (SHSP's).

Accordingly, the TPB will be holding a Safety Forum on June 6, 2007, in Rooms 4/5 on the first floor of 777 North Capitol Street NE, Washington D.C. 20001.  The Forum will run from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., and lunch will be served.

Participants will be briefed on the provisions of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia Strategic Highway Safety Plans, Safety trends and problems of the Washington region, and a the proposed emphasis areas to be incorporated in the Safety Element of the Long-Range Plan.  The Forum will also endeavor to identify areas in which the region can cooperate to further the goals of the State Strategic Highway Safety Plans and the proposed Safety Element of the regional Long-Range Transportation Plan.  A permanent advisory committee on Safety may be created.

The broadest possible participation in this forum is encouraged, to include representatives from the engineering, education, enforcement, public health, and emergency response communities.  During the meeting, the SHSP's and the various emphasis areas and specific goals and objectives to reduce overall fatalities and injuries will be presented and input will be sought from local representatives on current safety initiatives and how they can assist in implementing the SHSP's.
