The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) elected Fairfax County Supervisor Walter Alcorn as new TPB chair on October 15. Supervisor Alcorn, who represents the Hunter Mill District, has been a member of the board since 2020. Alcorn will serve as chair through the January 21, 2026, TPB meeting. City of Gaithersburg Councilmember Neil Harris and DC Councilmember Matthew Frumin will continue to serve as 2025 vice chairs.
In addition to the TPB, Alcorn chairs Fairfax County Board’s Older Adults Committee and serves on the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) and the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC). Alcorn also is one of two principal Virginia directors on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Board.
During Alcorn’s chairmanship, the TPB will take action on the final steps of Visualize 2050, the FY 2026-2029 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and the region’s Air Quality Conformity Analysis results. Alcorn will also oversee the TPB’s review and approval of recommended, proposed projects as part of the Enhanced Mobility – Round 7 competitive selection process.
"The next few months will be very active for TPB," said Alcorn. "Finalization of Visualize 2050 is important for regional mobility."
Alcorn steps into the TPB chair role following the September election of former TPB Chair James Walkinshaw to the U.S. House of Representatives. TPB members and staff thank Representative Walkinshaw for his tenure as a board member, TPB Steering Committee member, and former TPB Access for All Advisory Committee chair. Under his leadership, the TPB moved forward with the development of Visualize 2050, the National Capital Region’s 20-year long-range transportation plan, and has made strides in addressing roadway safety, supporting expansion of the multimodal transportation network, and improving coordination around infrastructure resilience planning.
Next Board Meeting
The TPB next meets on November 19, 2025, when the agenda highlights the draft Visualize 2050 National Capital Region Transportation Plan ahead of the TPB’s decision on plan approval at its December 17 meeting.
