The latest unemployment figures were not at all positive – job creation was far below the level necessary to start getting a significant number of Americans back to work and the unemployment rate rose to 9.2 percent its highest level this year.

Preservation is one of the best ways to increase the supply of affordable transit-oriented housing in a super high-price market like metro Washington. Purchasing housing in key areas prior to prices skyrocketing allows affordable housing to remain as such but this requires a proactive approach. This was the focus of a panel discussion at the recent kickoff meeting of the Region Forward Coalition and a subsequent post here on The Yardstick .

Kaid Benfield has a great piece over at his blog on NRDC today about the importance of “place” in sustainability. Benfield notes that when planning for how to make places sustainable there are three levels – in descending order of scale – that need to be considered: 1) the entire metro region 2) the jurisdiction – be it city county or town and 3) the neighborhood.

TDML. Come again? Huh? Another acronym? We last mentioned TDML back in November 2010 so you’re forgiven if you’ve forgotten what it means. TDML stands for “Total Daily Maximum Load” and in layman’s terms that translates into “a pollution limit for bodies of water.” The EPA is working with local officials to put these limits in place for the Chesapeake Bay the largest estuary in the country. ​

The Daily Measure recently featured a video clip highlighting a debate on the region’s short- and long-term transportation priorities . The debate centered on whether we as a region should focus on increasing capacity and reducing our infamous traffic congestion by building more roads or by investing in transit and other alternative modes of transport. Whichever side you fall on in such a debate funding is essential to achieve your goals.

What originally began as GreenHOME whose mission was to make affordable housing and its neighborhoods green has evolved into Greenspace NCR with the mission of working with partners to grow the region’s green places economy and communities. Greenspace is developing a new 12000 square foot green learning and resource center to be housed at the Nationals ballpark in Southeast Washington DC.
