Introducing Collaboration in Action, COG's video series hosted by Executive Director Clark Mercer. The series spotlights COG's work with member jurisdictions and private, nonprofit, and civic organizations on a wide variety of programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life for everyone in our DMV region. Come along as Clark takes you behind the scenes of several of our initiatives, spreading the word about the value of regional partnership and highlighting the leaders and experts in our network that are making a positive impact in our communities.

COG Podcast

Prior to Collaboration in Action, COG produced a podcast, Think Regionally, to raise awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focus on solutions. The podcast, which was hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, featured local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    Fifteen local transportation projects in the Washington region will receive funding under a new, consolidated federal program aimed at supporting projects that expand travel choices like bicycling and walking, or that make other enhancements like mitigating the environmental impacts of transportation facilities.

    Council of Governments Executive Director Chuck Bean and staff took a tour of regional energy assets in Charles County Maryland in July which highlighted the integration of power sources that keep the lights on in Metropolitan Washington. From a recently installed solar farm to the wind turbine in Newburg the tour showed that energy production in Charles County is also increasingly sustainable.     The Transportation Planning Board in July approved 20 major roadway or bicycle and pedestrian projects in Virginia and the District of Columbia to add to the region's constrained long-range transportation plan, or CLRP.

    Last month the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments approved an update to the Cooperative Forecast of employment households and population. The forecast is primarily used for transportation modeling where it determines how many people are likely to live in each part of the region and where they are likely to travel.     Fairfax County Hosts Coalition Exhibits Vibrant Merrifield Redevelopment Project

    On July 26 members of the Region Forward Coalition met in the Mosaic District where they discussed—and witnessed firsthand— the transformation of Merrifield-Dunn Loring into a vibrant Activity Center. Chairman of the Fairfax County Board Sharon Bulova told the Coalition “ In Fairfax County our future is in redevelopment. As we grow we look for opportunities to build mixed-use walkable transit-oriented development to give people options other than driving alone in their cars to get places.”​

    Between now and August 23, stakeholders, advocacy groups, and interested members of the general public are invited to review and comment on the Transportation Planning Board's draft Regional Transportation Priorities Plan, the culmination of a multi-year effort to identify the best strategies for addressing the region's most pressing transportation challenges.
