    Regional Sewer Infrastructure, Water Quality, and Ongoing Repair Work

    The Potomac Interceptor is a 54-mile sewer system that transports wastewater from Northern Virginia and Maryland to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant in Washington, D.C.  On January 19th, a section of the Potomac Interceptor Sewer Pipeline collapsed near Clara Barton Parkway and the I 495 interchange. The memo provides an overview of the regional sewer infrastructure, key agencies, the timeline of the collapse and response, water quality monitoring and sampling, and regional coordination and communication.

COG also strengthened public safety coordination and finalized Visualize 2050, the region's federally mandated, metropolitan transportation plan. These initiatives support a resilient, accessible, and sustainable future for all residents and member jurisdictions across metropolitan Washington.

Its purpose is to highlight best practices, gathered from community leaders and local governments, for enhancing and maintaining engagement with environmental justice communities, and to include examples and resources for additional information.
