As rising gas prices make the expense of driving alone to work even greater, the Commuter Connections program at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) is reminding area residents about effective ways to save money and improve their commutes.

"With the cost of commuting rising, this is a great time for people to consider alternatives to their drive-alone commute," said COG Commuter Connections Director Daniel Sheehan. "Commuter Connections provides several free options that fit different lifestyles. Together with our partners, we are helping residents cut costs, reduce traffic, and build a more sustainable region."

The Commuter Connections Ridematching Program offers free and easy ways to find opportunities to save money on gas, use HOV-3 lanes during rush hour, travel the Virginia Express Lanes for free, and avoid expensive parking costs. Commuters can register at www.CommuterConnections.org.

The CommuterCash app rewards commuters who log trips to earn rewards points redeemable for cash, Visa gift cards, Capital Bikeshare credits, or Metro SmarTrip fare. CommuterCash participants can earn up to $600 per calendar year. Vanpools of at least seven people can qualify for a $200 recurring monthly subsidy.

Beginning April 1 through May 15, commuters can compete to earn prizes and bragging rights as part of the region-wide goDMV Commuter Competition. Participants compete by logging their sustainable trips in CommuterCash. Those who log the most trips can win extra cash and prizes like tickets to Nationals and Wizards games, a Sportrock Climbing Party, a wine tasting at Big Cork Vineyards and more!

Commuters who carpool, vanpool, take public transportation, or bicycle to work two or more days a week receive a safety net through the Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) program. GRH provides a free and reliable ride home during illness, emergencies, or unscheduled overtime.

The incentive to share a ride or take transit is now greater than ever! Commuter Connections 2025 State of the Commute survey showed that transit satisfaction is increasing while solo driving satisfaction has decreased. With Commuter Connections reporting a 200 percent increase in match list requests in 2025, finding a carpool partner is now easier and more convenient than ever.
