From connecting regional trails to encouraging new riders, metropolitan Washington is making bicycling a safer, more accessible travel option. Through partnerships with local governments, businesses, and advocacy organizations, COG is helping the region build a seamless system that supports commuters and reduces roadway congestion. These initiatives promote good health, a clean environment, and a strong economy, proving that regional collaboration drives sustainable mobility across the DMV.
In this episode of Collaboration in Action, COG Executive Director Clark Mercer takes part in the 25th anniversary of Bike to Work Day organized by COG’s Commuter Connections program and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA). For his morning ride, he joins City of Alexandria Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley. He also visits the National Landing pit stop in Arlington County to speak with pit stop manager Matthew Jones about engaging new commuters. Next, Mercer takes viewers inside a Capital Bikeshare facility in the District of Columbia where he speaks with Aaron Goldbeck, Capital Bikeshare Sustainable Transportation Programs Manager at DDOT, and Blake Dickler, Lyft General Manager for Capital Bikeshare, about the system's growing footprint and its connection to the broader transit network. Finally, Mercer travels to the City of Hyattsville to check out the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail. He meets with Urooj Zafar, Senior Safety Officer for the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration and Michael Farrell, COG Senior Transportation Planner, and discusses regional efforts to complete the National Capital Trail Network.
