Introducing Collaboration in Action, COG's video series hosted by Executive Director Clark Mercer. The series spotlights COG's work with member jurisdictions and private, nonprofit, and civic organizations on a wide variety of programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life for everyone in our DMV region. Come along as Clark takes you behind the scenes of several of our initiatives, spreading the word about the value of regional partnership and highlighting the leaders and experts in our network that are making a positive impact in our communities.

COG Podcast

Prior to Collaboration in Action, COG produced a podcast, Think Regionally, to raise awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focus on solutions. The podcast, which was hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, featured local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    In 2014 the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments identified regional infrastructure as its focus and held a series on COG’s main areas of expertise such as transportation water energy and public safety communications. Officials planned the series to identify policy advocacy and outreach actions around key infrastructure needs.

    Officials planners and stakeholders need to consider public health when making decisions about land use transportation and other infrastructure according to Dr. Mark Fenton who spoke at the October meeting of the Region Forward Coalition. Fenton a Tufts University professor spoke to “landscaping a social ecology for health” which includes planning communities with walkable retail public sidewalks bike infrastructure and safe facilities for all age groups.

    As the UN Climate Conference in Bonn Germany gears up this month the National Capital Region is working on climate change locally.     Whether it’s used water from a sink a toilet dishwasher or washing machine every day 24-hours a day and 365 days a year that “dirty” water is treated at wastewater plants throughout the metropolitan Washington region. For a great portion of this region almost half of of that wastewater is treated at the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment

    NextGen 9-1-1 service will feature wider support for texting 9-1-1 during an emegency.

    The ability to reach emergency first responders is vital to saving lives but in most areas of the country services like 9-1-1 calls still use outdated technologies . Upgraded emergency-communications infrastructure will be vital not only to keeping our region functioning on a daily basis but to avoiding the problems caused when 9-1-1 communications have failed in the past.
