Planning Areas

Through the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB), area officials, planners, and engineers ensure a well-managed and maintained transportation system both now and into the future. The TPB is the federally established Metropolitan Planning Organization for the National Capital Region, staffed by COG, and it conducts the metropolitan transportation planning process for the region and ensures the uninterrupted flow of federal transportation funds to area jurisdictions to implement transportation projects and programs.

The Transportation Planning Board's work to provide mobility and accessibility for all spans a wide range of transportation modes, such as highways, transit, walking, and bicycling, as well as planning related to the region's freight movement and three major airports. The TPB also addresses some of the region’s most significant issues like transportation resilience, the economy, public health, traffic safety, emerging technologies, land use, and funding.
