Wise Water Use Campaign

While the Potomac River is a reliable and resilient source of drinking water, the metropolitan Washington region has experienced droughts in the recent past, which reinforces the need for a year round wise water use campaign. COG, in cooperation with local water utilities, adopted the "Wise Water" program to demonstrate simple wise water use practices. The awareness campaign includes numerous water saving tips that are easy to incorporate into daily practices, from turning the water off while brushing teeth, to properly adjusting landscape planning throughout the year. With awareness and a little effort, area residents can help preserve and protect regional water resources.

Tips for Wise Water Use:

• Monitor watering lawns, plants and shrubs;
• Sweep sidewalks and driveways (instead of using a hose);
• Avoid washing your car, or use a commercial car wash that recycles water;
• Fix leaking toilets and faucets;
• Reduce shower length to under 5 minutes;
• Turn off water while brushing your teeth; and
• Wash full loads of dishes and clothes
