Wise Water Use Campaign

Tips to Use Water Wisely

While the Potomac River is a reliable source of drinking water, the metropolitan Washington region does experience droughts, reinforcing the need for year-round wise water use messaging. Now that the region is currently under a Drought Watch, COG and our partners are encouraging area residents and business to voluntarily conserve water through a variety of simple steps and have prepared a toolkit to help amplify these messages.

Tips for Wise Water Use:

INDOOR
  • Reduce shower length to under 5 minutes;
  • Turn off water while brushing your teeth/shaving;
  • Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes; and
  • Fix any plumbing leaks – especially toilets and faucets.

OUTDOOR
  • Monitor watering lawns, plants, and shrubs;
  • Sweep sidewalks and driveways (instead of using a hose); and
  • Avoid washing your car or instead use a commercial car wash that recycles water.
