Restoring Metro

Metro 7000 train by ep_jhu

Metro is fundamental to the region’s long-term success, and COG is working with area leaders to ensure the system’s safety and reliability. COG’s recent work has involved action on various fronts.

In 2017, the Metro Strategy Group, made up of elected officials from the COG Board of Directors and Transportation Planning Board, focused on helping the region ensure the transit system’s long-term financial sustainability by securing permanent, dedicated funding. COG also brought together a technical panel of city and county managers and financial experts, who analyzed Metro’s needs as well as options for how the region’s localities can help meet those needs. In 2018, COG has continued to support dialogue among area officials and serve as a resource to them until a final funding agreement is in place.

COG has supported the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia in creating an independent Metrorail Safety Commission that will assume safety oversight of the system from the Federal Transit Administration. In addition, the COG Fire Chiefs Committee has worked with Metro to enhance coordination, conduct regular exercises, and make improvements to underground communications.
